Graduate Psychology Programs

The Department of Psychology offers graduate study in three areas: experimental, clinical mental health counseling, and school counseling. We offer a variety of graduate courses that provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge in each program area.

Our faculty encourages students to become active  participants in research. Research participation may include students conducting their own projects or working with a faculty member on his or her ongoing research project.

The Psychology Department operates a Counseling Training Clinic from January to early June. Free counseling services are provided to members of the community by graduate students in our M.S. Clinical Mental Health Counseling program and M.Ed. School Counseling program. WWU Psychology faculty members supervise all graduate student counselors. WWU students interested in receiving counseling services should contact the WWU Counseling Center operated by Health and Wellness Services in Old Main 540. Their phone number is 650-3164.

An integral part of the Department of Psychology is the Center for Cross-Cultural Research. The Center for Cross-Cultural Research was established for the scientific study of and education about cultural influences on human psychological functioning. Culture is broadly taken to mean shared meanings and understanding (e.g., values, norms, attitudes) held by group members. Courses explore cross-cultural issues, and faculty regularly conduct research worldwide.

The Department also houses the Western Institute for Social Research (WISR). WISR included approximately 10 faculty members in the Department who share interests and research investigating diverse social conditions and processes.
